Finally getting the chance to watch MTV again after being cooped up in NUS with no cable for the past year, its quite surprising to see how much music has changed. Gone are the songs with beautiful melody which makes u listen in awe, lyrics worth pondering over. In comes monotonous 16 beats trying to emulate the rap culture portrayed by Eminem (is he even popular anymore?) or other ghetto rappers. Now, that's not to say that i don't appreciate Eminem's music, in fact i love his music for how cleverly he rhymes his lyrics together, rapping, yet with a unique rhythm and sound. He's good. But, what i hear and watch on MTV today is different. I see wannabes selling record just because they're doing hip hop. They dress like rappers, always "representin' " their "clan". Allow me to stereotype for a minute, saying that rappers only rap about violence, sex and guns. As if we haven't got enough of that already watching with only our eyes, now we have to listen to it too.
Or maybe, rap with its monotonous beats and obscene lyrics has been around all along, just that it never bothered me, until now. Perhaps as the harshness of life becomes more apparent in the past year (with experiences which i can't say is for the best), i yearn for cheesy lyrics and flowing melody - granting me peace and tranquility. If i can't get it in when i look around me, why not just shut my eyes and listen to fairy tales that DO take place in these songs? The words are therapeautic in a way, giving me something to hold on to when all i feel is sorrow. Sometimes, it does feel as though the singer is talking to you. It takes away some of the loneliness. Call it escapism, call it wacko, wtv...
